The Zig Zag Diet
I once worked with a coworker who, in his spare time, was a professional body builder. He had a lot of opinions on eating healthily. He was on the zig zag diet. 6 days a week he would eat according to his high protein low fat diet. Helps to build muscles. The on the 7th day (usually Wednesdays) he would zag.
His theory was that his body got used to the “zig” diet, and it stopped being as effective. It got used to the fewer calories and started hording calories, effective reducing the weight-loss aspects of it. The body got used to healthy food so it did not “take advantage” of it and started needing fewer calories to function.
His “zag” day he got to eat at places like Outback Steakhouse. He totally chowed down. His theory was that his body would get hyped up by all the calories, and, anticipating the same number afterwards, would NOT horde calories on his zig days. His dieting and high protein would be all used up, and there would not be excess.
I’m not sure the theory is a vaild one. In fact I think it’s a load of bull. Today was a “zag” day for me, and I used that theory to justify it. The truth is, I don’t think I can justify it, and tomorrow I am just going to have to face my scale again.
